Cologne is the fourth largest city in the Republic of Germany, the largest city on the
Rhine and one of the oldest cities in Germany. The impressive silhouette of
"holy" Cologne, with it's abundant church towers, came into being in the Middle
Ages; the Cologne Cathedral, however, was first completed in the early 19th century and
stands as the symbol for Cologne. Big

After World War II, the heavily-damaged towers of the Cathedral witnessed not only the
city in rubble, but also the slow but steady rebirth of Cologne in the following
years. Big picture
Cologne Cathedral
Where the Cathedral stands today, stood a church in the 4th
century.
On the 15th of August, 1248, the first foundation for the Cathedral was laid by Archbishop
Konrad von Hochstaden.
1880, after 632 years , the Cologne Cathedral was finished.
1943, the Cathedral was heavily damaged by bombing.
1996, UNESCO admits the Cathedral in the list of World Culture Heritages as a
"masterpiece of gothic architecture." Big picture

Früh
The brewery, Früh am Dom, is not only geographically the center of the
city, but it's also only a stone-throw away from the Cathedral, natives and travelers meet
to enjoy the "Früh"- beer and have a chat. Big picture
A Kölsch (cologne beer brand) is a smooth, light, top-fermented
beer. You
drink a Kölsch from a so-called "Kölschstange", a thin cylindrical glass
(holding 0.2 liters of beer). It is served to you from a "Kranz"- a circular
tray, by a "Köbes"- the typical term in Cologne for brewery
waiters. Big picture

"Gasthaus Stahl is a real gem of a place, in that
wonderful, scenic location up in the hills above the Rhine, in classic tiny Dellhofen
village, yet only minutes away from the walled cities of Oberwesel and Bacharach, right on
the river.
There are enough castles and other places of interest within 30-90 minutes of
pleasant driving to keep tourists busy for a long time, but the serenity of the inn itself
is the best feature.
The rooms are so classic, yet they have all the modern touches we need. The
furnishings and atmosphere of the inn are from times we thought had gone past, and it was
great to just soak in the gemutlichkeit! ... "

The old brick arch wine
cellar of the Winery
Stahl, in which the wines are stored; the wine grapes are self-grown and the wines are
self-made. Wine tasting for groups up to 30 people in the brick arch wine
cellar. You'll
become a romantic feeling with the lights off and set aglow in candlelight. "The wine tasting at Weingut Stahl is truly educational, with more
varieties of flavorful German wines than most Americans ever realize exist. I think that
is worth the trip in itself."

Beethovenhouse in Bonn
On the 17th of December, 1770, Ludwig van Beethoven was born in this house.

Only two of his five younger siblings lived past their first
year. Caspar
Anton Carl (1774-1815) and Nikolaus Johann (1776-1848) were always very close to Ludwig.
His father noticed his extraordinary talent at a very early age. Big picture
Beethoven lived and worked here as a musician, until 1792. Then he moved to Vienna where

Remagen

Bridge of Remagen
The railway bridge over the Rhine was built during the first World War, for
the purpose of bringing more troops and war materials to the western front. On March the
7th, 1945, the Americans managed to capture this bridge, before the German troops were
able to blow it up. This conquest went down in history as the "Wonder of
Remagen", and helped the Allies accelerate the German capitulation. On the 17th of
March in the same year, the bridge collapsed from overload. On this occasion, 28 Americans
died. The bridge was never rebuilt.
Today, the remnants of the bridge-structure on the left side of the Rhine accommodate the
peace-museum "Brücke von Remagen. Next to documentation of these historical
events,
one can find a historical presentation of the Nobel Peace Prize, to which is added
yearly.
